Beware the Salesforce Recruiter Scam And Why Human-Reviewed Resumes Still Win

Recruiter scam

Imagine this: a senior Salesforce recruiter reaches out to you. They have a polished LinkedIn profile, appear on Salesforce’s website, and even provide a Workday ATS link that looks legitimate. They claim to have multiple roles perfectly aligned to your background. The catch? Your resume needs “ATS optimization” first.

A candidate we recently supported experienced exactly this.

She was contacted by someone presenting as a senior recruiter, complete with a credible online presence on the company’s website, a LinkedIn profile with tens of thousands of connections. The Workday link to the opportunity looked real. The opportunity felt real. Everything checked out — at first glance.

Then came the surprise.

She was introduced to a “trusted partner” who would help optimize her resume for ATS systems. After paying for that service, she was encouraged to purchase additional support: cover letters and, unusually, multiple letters of reference. And who was recommended to provide those? The same partner network — for an additional fee.

At that point, the pattern became clear.

A legitimate corporate recruiter will never ask you to pay for resume services, cover letters, or references, especially for roles they claim to be actively filling. That’s not how real hiring processes work.

ATS Optimization — What It Actually Means

ATS (Applicant Tracking System) optimization is often misunderstood. At its core, it’s just practical:

  • Parsing accuracy: Ensuring your resume is formatted so systems can correctly read your experience, titles, dates, and skills.
  • Keyword alignment: Thoughtfully reflecting the language used in job descriptions so your background is properly recognized.

That’s it.

ATS optimization is about clarity and alignment, not gaming a system or guaranteeing outcomes. And it’s certainly not something a legitimate recruiter would require you to pay for upfront.

Quick Tips to Make Your Resume More ATS-Friendly

A few simple adjustments can make a meaningful difference:

  • Avoid overly designed templates or heavy graphics
  • Skip columns, text boxes, and complex layouts (these often don’t parse correctly)
  • Use standard section headings like ExperienceEducation, and Skills
  • Keep formatting clean and consistent (simple fonts, clear hierarchy)
  • Incorporate relevant keywords naturally. Don’t overstuff
  • Save and submit as a .docx or PDF only if formatting is preserved cleanly

If you need ATS optimization support, Acumen can help. Because well-structured resumes don’t just help systems, they make it easier for real people to quickly understand your story.

How Acumen Approaches It Differently

At Acumen, our philosophy is straightforward: hiring is a human decision.

  • Every resume is reviewed by an experienced recruiter
  • ATS considerations are applied to ensure nothing gets lost, not to filter people out
  • We prioritize experience, trajectory, and fit, not just keyword matches

Think of ATS as a tool, not the decision-maker. The real value comes from how your story is interpreted, positioned, and advocated.

A Friendly Reminder for Job Seekers

  • Verify recruiter identities through official channels
  • Be cautious of anyone asking for payment tied to job opportunities
  • Understand what ATS optimization is and what it isn’t
  • Work with partners who combine technology with real human insight

Scams like this work because they blur the line between legitimate hiring practices and confusion around tools like ATS.

The truth is simpler: your career shouldn’t be decided by a system, and you shouldn’t have to navigate it alone.

At Acumen, we keep it human.
