The Difference Between a Good Hire and the Right Hire

Hire

When organizations think about executive hiring, they often focus on experience, technical expertise, and industry knowledge. While these qualities are essential, they are rarely what determine the long-term success of a leadership team.

The real differentiator is alignment.

At the executive level, success is not simply about finding a capable leader. It is about finding the right leader who complements the existing team, embraces the organization’s culture, and shares a vision for where the company is headed.

Recently, we had the opportunity to witness the power of alignment firsthand.

After a remarkable 13-year partnership between Monrovia‘s CEO and CFO, the company’s longtime CFO announced his retirement. Replacing a senior leader is challenging under any circumstances. Replacing one half of a trusted leadership partnership that has evolved over more than a decade is something else entirely.

The relationship between a CEO and CFO is among the most important partnerships in any organization. Together, they balance vision and execution, opportunity and risk, growth and financial stewardship. When they are aligned, decisions are made more effectively, trust is strengthened throughout the organization, and the business moves forward with confidence.

Our search focused on more than identifying a CFO with strong financial credentials. We needed to find someone who could become a trusted strategic partner to CEO Jonathan Pedersen while also earning the confidence of Monrovia’s Board and leadership team.

That person was Celeste Porter. Acumen successfully recruited and placed Celeste as Monrovia’s new Chief Financial Officer. From the beginning, she demonstrated the qualities that matter most in executive leadership: direct communication, sound judgment, credibility, and a collaborative approach. Most importantly, she fit the culture and values that have made Monrovia successful for 100 years.

The results were evident almost immediately.

“We love Celeste. You could not have found a better fit for us. She is direct, competent, and solid. She is the perfect match to Jonathan and exactly what we needed as a Board. Thank you.”

For us, this moment was especially meaningful because it reflected something deeper than a successful placement. It reflected the successful alignment of leadership, culture, and organizational needs.

At Acumen, we believe the goal of executive search is not simply to fill a position. It is to build leadership teams that work exceptionally well together. Technical qualifications may earn a candidate an interview, but alignment is what creates trust, accelerates impact, and drives long-term success.

When executive leaders are aligned with each other, with their board, and with the organization’s culture, extraordinary things become possible.

That is the power of alignment. And that is what we strive to create with every search.

LEADERSHIP REFLECTION

When evaluating your next executive hire, ask yourself: Am I looking for the most qualified candidate, or the candidate who will create the strongest alignment within my leadership team? The answer can make all the difference.
